Today’s digital world of music is upside down. Where music used to be imperfect, making us strive for perfection, in the digital realm we are now striving for the exact opposite, tearing down perfect sounds to make them sound ‘better’. To really take this concept to the extreme, Igorski has developed the FREE plugin Homecorrupter, designed to fiercely degrade your sound ‘to a period in which computers weren’t actually that good at handling audio’.

Homecorrupter serves to degrade the resolution of any incoming audio signal on the fly, by decreasing the sample rate and bit depth, and by subtly slowing back playback. It can be used in sound design and recording scenarios, providing up to 30 seconds of recording time to use the slowdown feature to the max. Scratch sound can be achieved as well by manipulating this feature.

Controls are easy with control for sample rate, bit depth and playback speed, all of which can be modulated with an LFO. A Dry/Wet knob offers tweakable balance between the two.

As for practical use, there are at least various ambient and moody styles in which this little tool feels right at home, but even dubstep or other more direct approaches can make it purposeful to use. As with most of these effect plugins though, the only true limit is one’s imagination and creativity.
