The 1176 Classic Limiter Collection, with its updated graphics and additional controls, continues the legacy of analog modeling excellence established by the original 1176. The collection provides three distinct 1176 revisions, representing over 40 years of design iterations. These include the Rev A “Bluestripe”, the original Putnam FET limiter design, the Rev E “Blackface” from the early ’70s Brad Plunkett “LN” (Low Noise) era, and the rare 1176 40th Anniversary Edition, complete with exclusive mods.

Using the 1176 is straightforward. Input sets the compression threshold and the level of the signal entering the 1176, while Output sets the final signal level. Attack sets the time it takes the 1176 to respond to incoming signal, and Release sets the time it takes the 1176 to return to its initial level. The VU meter displays the amount of gain reduction or output level.

The four Ratio buttons determine the degree of gain reduction with lower ratios for compression and higher ratios for limiting. Disengaging all Ratio buttons disables compression, while continuing to pass signal through the 1176 circuitry, adding distinct color. The famous “All Button” sound and other “Multi-Button” combinations possible with the hardware are now attainable in the plug-in.

The collection also includes exclusive plug-in only features for modern workflows. These include quick parallel processing on bass and kick drums with Dry/Wet mix controls, and a custom Sidechain Filter to tame low-frequency pumping. Enhanced graphics with improved VU metering bring this iconic FET compression into a new age.

The Universal Audio 1176 Classic Limiter Collection is compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina, 11 Big Sur, 12 Monterey, 13 Ventura, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit only Editions). It requires an Intel, AMD, or Apple silicon processor, an internet connection to download software and authorize UADx plug-ins, and a free iLok account with iLok Cloud or iLok USB (2nd generation or higher). A physical iLok dongle is not required to activate this product.

In terms of DAW compatibility, the collection works with Pro Tools 2022 (AAX), Logic Pro (Audio Units), Ableton Live 11 (VST 3, Audio Units), Cubase 12 (VST 3), Studio One 5 (VST 3), and LUNA Recording System.
