About Sugar Bytes Graindad
Graindad by Sugar Bytes is a granular effect for high-quality, real-time audio manipulation. It allows you to freeze, texturize, or reorganize & slice your audio, triggered by transients, clocks, or MIDI notes. It boasts a complex modulation system with intelligent randomizers for astonishing results. In addition, Graindad includes filters, reverbs, delays and the all-at-once manipulating Harvester for a complete package.
With up to 64 grains, Graindad provides extensive possibilities for sound definition in real-time. Its two modulation systems – a classic system and a modulation system called Harvester – offer access to granular synthesis and allow for unique results when mixed. Graindad also incorporates randomization for nearly every parameter, with dedicated functions to define when randomization should be triggered.
The heart of Graindad is its Grain Engine. The Engine allows for simultaneous recording and playback and organizes the grains to achieve various effects like looping, stuttering, time stretching, pitch shifting, reversing, or harmonizing. Graindad can also record in sync to your host clock, be triggered directly via MIDI, and even start recording depending on transients in your audio material.
Graindad’s Modulation Engine provides an envelope, LFO and a classic step sequencer with step repeat as modulation sources. The Harvester, various randomizers and MIDI notes can also be used for modulation. The intensity and source of modulation can be controlled by randomizers in different modes. The Modmix Control facilitates crossfades between the Harvester and Main Page modulation for surprising results.
The Effects section of Graindad brings classic effects like filters, reverbs, and delays, including lowpass, bandpass, band reject and highpass filters, three different reverb effects and varying delay types. Dry/Wet controls allow for easy blending of filter sweeps or the use of the bandpass as a peaking EQ to emphasize certain frequencies.
The Harvester in Graindad modulates all 12 main controls at once, with the modulation depth defined by the distance between the Harvester and parameter objects. The “moons” of the parameter objects can be recorded as automation or randomized for additional layers of motion. On the Auto-Pilot Page, the Harvester can move between 12 breakpoints, which can also be triggered by MIDI notes for performative control.
