Sonatura Audio releases Superhet free heterodyning plugin for Windows and Mac
Expiry: None
Sonatura Audio has released Superhet, a heterodyning plugin for macOS and Windows. The instrument generates two new frequencies—the sum and the difference—derived from two input pitches. The original input signals are not present in the output. The developer lists the plugin as a free download.
Heterodyning, introduced by Reginald Fessenden in 1901, produces calculable yet non–12‑tone results. For example, input tones at 440 Hz and 643 Hz yield 1,083 Hz (sum) and 203 Hz (difference). Because these outcomes are not tied to equal temperament, Superhet’s output can diverge from standard MIDI note pitches.
Superhet operates on pure pitch rather than note numbers. Users can drive the process from a MIDI keyboard to produce the heterodyned outputs, then shape results with amplitude and pitch controls.
- Generates sum and difference frequencies from two input pitches
- Pure-pitch operation (not note-based)
- Selectable waveforms
- Full ADSR amplitude envelope
- Switchable pitch envelope controls
- Visualizer showing all active pitches
- All parameters DAW-automatable
- Sample loading via JSON manifest
The developer provides tools to understand and work with the non-tempered outputs. A lookup table helps locate MIDI note numbers closest to the resulting heterodyned pitches. This can be used to explore tuning “shrink” and “stretch” behaviors and to map or decode melodic material.
- macOS: VST3, AU, Standalone; macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later; compatible with Intel and Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3)
- Windows: VST3, Standalone; Windows 10 (64-bit) or later
