Devil Loc Named Final Free Gift in Twelve Days of Soundtoys

Expiry: December 19th

Devil-Loc has been named the final free gift in the Twelve Days of Soundtoys promotion. The offer makes the compact distortion and compression plug-in available at no cost for a limited time as part of the company’s year-end giveaway.

Devil-Loc is a simple dynamics and saturation effect modeled after vintage limiter circuits known for heavy gain reduction and gritty character. It combines strong compression with harmonic distortion to create an intentionally aggressive, “crushed” sound.

The plug-in is often used to add punch and attitude to drum buses and room mics, intensify parallel compression chains, and thicken bass and guitars. It can also be applied to vocals, synths, and effects returns to push elements forward or create lo-fi textures for sound design.

The interface uses a minimal set of controls to dial in compression intensity and drive, with a basic tone-shaping option to darken the signal and tame high-end harshness. The streamlined layout is designed for quick results rather than detailed parameter tweaking.

Devil-Loc runs as a plug-in in major DAWs on macOS and Windows and is available in common formats such as VST3, AU, and AAX. It is part of the broader Soundtoys lineup; a separate Devil-Loc Deluxe edition offers expanded control for users who need more detailed shaping.

Expiry: January 4th

KV331 Audio is offering SynthMaster One, a wavetable software synthesizer, as a free download. The regular price is $49. The SynthMaster One All Expansions bundle is available for $39, down from $99.

SynthMaster One is a cross‑platform instrument. It runs as a VST on Windows and macOS, as an Audio Unit on macOS and iOS, and as a standalone application on Windows.

Version 1.3 adds a white skin with scalable sizes from 80% to 200%, 200 new factory presets by BT (Brian Transeau), Kurt Ader, and Luke Neptune, and an expanded scale library ranging from five‑tone equal‑tempered to 12‑tone alternate‑tuning scales. The total number of factory presets is now 1,250.

The instrument implements wavetable synthesis with the option to import user wavetables via drag and drop. It includes a built‑in wavetable library that can be extended by placing files in the Waveforms folder.

The semi‑modular architecture features two main oscillators and two sub oscillators, two filters, four ADSR envelopes, two LFOs, and a step‑based arpeggiator/sequencer. Sub oscillators can operate as traditional subs or be routed for ring, amplitude, phase, or frequency modulation. Oscillators are stereo and support up to 16‑voice unison with controls for voice mix, detune curve and spread, pan spread, tone spread, and phase spread.

Basic oscillator algorithms include spectral (LP, HP, LS, HS, BP, BS), bend (Bend+, Bend−, Bend+/−), sync (Rect Window, Half Cos Window, Cos Window, Tri Window, Saw Window), pulse (Pulse1, Pulse2), and quantize, plus standard waveforms such as sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, pulse, noise, and single‑cycle waves.

The filter section uses zero‑delay feedback designs across multiple categories:

  • Ladder: Low 12, Low 24, High 12, High 24, Band‑Pass, Band‑Stop
  • Diode Ladder: Low‑Pass 24
  • State Variable: Low 12, High 12, Band‑Pass, Band‑Stop
  • Bite: Low 12, High 6

Effects include 11 types: distortion, lo‑fi, ensemble, phaser, six‑band EQ, compressor, vocoder, delay, chorus, tremolo, and reverb. Any effect can be inserted per layer or on the two global effect buses.

Version 1.3 introduces three envelope algorithms—Digital, Profat, and Oobee—expanding the existing ADSR section for different response characteristics.

The microtuning system supports Scala files and can be applied per preset or globally. New options include keyboard mapping modes (“fill octave” or “consecutive”), a highlighted piano display for scale degrees, and settings for scale root and A4 reference frequency.

The arpeggiator provides classic modes (Up, Down, Up/Down variants, As Played) along with Sequence, Chord, and Arpeggiate modes. Each step can define velocity, note number, note length, slide, and hold. Monophonic or polyphonic MIDI patterns can be imported by dragging files onto the arpeggiator.

Data management and workflow additions include cloud‑based synchronization of presets, waveforms, samples, favorites, and MIDI programs across machines and platforms, with the option to share presets with other users. The preset browser supports search by instrument type, attributes, style, or author. Users can add custom preset attributes or styles, edit MIDI bank/program assignments, and filter presets by last modified date (Show All, Last 24 Hours, Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days).

SynthMaster One is designed for creating leads, pads, basses, sequences, and textures across electronic genres and scoring, with features suited to wavetable manipulation, analog‑style filtering, step sequencing, and alternate tunings.

Orchestral Tools launches FFOSSO music platform and instrument offering free tier and pro at ten euros per month

Expiry: None

Orchestral Tools has launched FFOSSO, a music platform and instrument plugin available as a freemium service. The free tier includes full access to the player features, 10 instruments, and a selection of pre-mapped multisampler presets for customization. FFOSSO Pro is a subscription priced at ten euros per month, offering access to more than 100 instruments with weekly content additions.

The plugin hosts a broad instrument collection built from acoustic recordings. Users can modify factory content or build their own setups with pre-mapped multisampler presets designed for further shaping.

FFOSSO introduces a modular environment (beta) that combines multi-sampling, synthesis, and effects. Users can choose from a growing library of modules to assemble instrument signal flows.

Additional “Elements” (beta) provide a library of cloud-based, pre-mapped multisampler presets. These can be stacked, sequenced, and processed with DSP tools to create custom instruments and performance-ready patches.

Engine: Layers
Layers provides multi-layer blending for evolving textures. A central control mixes concentric layers in real time, enabling smooth transitions, overlaps, and morphing between sources.

Engine: Threads
Threads is a compact rhythmic engine with three independently sequenced lanes. Each lane supports direct velocity editing, while layer-specific controls adjust playback behavior so patterns can drift, lock, or reorient.

Engine: Chords
Chords is designed for harmonic work, allowing real-time control of voicings, progressions, and layer blends. It supports quick exploration of chord structures and live manipulation of harmonic textures.

Engine: Orbits
Orbits places four sound sources on a single XY pad. Movement across the pad blends the sources dynamically, producing continuous timbral changes and layered atmospheres through simple gestures.

Engine: Disperse
Disperse handles four studio-string voices that expand from a central pitch by up to one octave. Controls manage the spread and interaction of each voice, enabling chords that stretch and shift over time.

Engine: Jupiter
Jupiter uses a particle-style model to generate textures and irregular rhythms. Collisions and drift between particles form evolving patterns, with behavior that can transition between clustered activity and repeating streams.

Instruments and engines support real-time control for shaping texture, movement, and variation. Users can assemble ambient soundscapes, rhythmic sequences, and chord progressions, or design performance patches that respond to continuous input.

Gulf Coast Synthesis releases Strum Plate free Omnichord style strummer plugin for Mac and Windows

Expiry: None

Gulf Coast Synthesis has released Strum Plate, a free MIDI effect for macOS and Windows that provides an Omnichord-style strumming interface using a mouse or pitch wheel. It is available as VST3, AU, AAX, and as a standalone application. Strum Plate generates MIDI only and requires routing to a software instrument for sound.

The plugin separates chord selection from rhythmic triggering. Users hold a chord on a MIDI keyboard while strumming an on-screen plate or moving a pitch wheel to trigger the notes in real time.

  • Hold a chord: Notes are buffered until triggered and do not sound immediately.
  • Strum the plate: Swipe the mouse across the on-screen plate or use the pitch wheel to activate notes.
  • Shape the sound: Use the mod wheel to control note length from short plucks to longer sustains. Adjust the octave range to expand patterns across multiple octaves.

Because Strum Plate outputs MIDI rather than audio, setup varies by DAW.

Pro Tools (2024+)

  • Create an Instrument Track.
  • Insert Strum Plate in the first insert slot (Insert A).
  • Insert the target virtual instrument in the next slot (Insert B).

Logic Pro

  • Insert Strum Plate in the MIDI FX slot above the instrument slot in the channel strip.
  • Do not load it as an audio effect.

Ableton Live

  1. On Track 1, load a software instrument and set Monitor to “In.”
  2. Create Track 2 as a MIDI track and load Strum Plate on it.
  3. On Track 1, set “MIDI From” to Track 2 (the track with Strum Plate).
  4. In the input selector below “MIDI From,” choose Strum Plate (Post FX).

GarageBand and older DAWs

For environments without MIDI FX support, use the included standalone application on macOS with a virtual MIDI port.

Step 1: Create a virtual port (macOS)

  1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (Applications > Utilities).
  2. Double-click IAC Driver.
  3. Enable “Device is online.”
  4. Create a port named “Strum Port.”

Step 2: Connect

  1. Open the Strum Plate standalone app.
  2. Select your hardware keyboard as MIDI Input.
  3. Select “Strum Port” as MIDI Output.
  4. In GarageBand or your DAW, set the track’s MIDI input to “Strum Port.”

Strum Plate is designed to control any compatible software instrument by translating chord input into strummed note events, with real-time control over note length and range via standard MIDI controllers.

Omnichord is a trademark of Suzuki Musical Instrument Corporation. Gulf Coast Synthesis is not affiliated with or endorsed by Suzuki.

Nakst Integrate virtual analog synth plugin for Windows and Linux now free

Expiry: None

Nakst has made Integrate, a virtual analog software synthesizer, available as a free download for Windows 64-bit and Linux. The instrument is delivered in the CLAP plugin format and requires a compatible host. A separate effects plugin using the same processing modules is included.

Integrate features four main oscillators offering 74 waveforms and a flexible noise generator with adjustable color and optional key tracking. Classic waves (sine, sawtooth, square, triangle) each expose a dedicated parameter for modulation. Frequency modulation, ring modulation, and hard sync are available. A sub-oscillator with three waveforms can be added to reinforce low-end content.

Oscillator character can be switched between Clean and Digital rendering modes. Oscillators A and B include unison with up to 7 voices, adjustable detune and mix, and a stereo spread option.

The modulation system provides two modulation envelopes with a tension control and three LFOs supporting multiple wave shapes, including a Chaos mode that generates random samples at 1 kHz. A modulation matrix routes sources to up to 106 destinations. Destinations can be assigned by interacting directly with highlighted controls.

Two filters can be routed in Split, Serial, or Parallel configurations. Each filter offers nine modes and a built-in saturator with 10 algorithms.

Nine effect units are integrated, each switchable individually, with a global FX bypass and visual dimming for disabled modules. The included companion effects plugin allows the same processors to be used on any audio channel, with reorderable units and modulation via three multi-segment curve editors.

  • Delay with polyrhythmic and ping-pong modes
  • Reverb with five algorithms
  • Arpeggiator with optional envelope retrigger
  • Trancegate with a step editor
  • Three-band parametric EQ
  • Phaser with positive/negative feedback and configurable stages
  • Chorus with stereo operation and a wide rate range
  • Multiband distortion with 10 waveshaping algorithms
  • Compressor

The interface presents context popups for detailed parameter information, waveforms, envelopes, and spectra only while controls are being adjusted. The layout is divided into two pages—main controls and effects—aimed at reducing menu depth. Multiple scale factors support high‑resolution displays, with several color themes. A patch browser includes over 200 factory presets and tools for organizing user patches.

Integrate supports CLAP features such as non-destructive polyphonic parameter modulation and note stacking. A signal path diagram is accessible from the Settings menu, and a full manual is available for in-depth guidance.

Performance optimizations adapt to available CPU instruction sets by selecting appropriate code paths at runtime. The software uses no copy protection; it can be installed on multiple computers, functions offline, and does not require license keys.

System requirements: Windows 64-bit or Linux and a compatible CLAP host. The download is free.
