Ewan Bristow releases UZU Spectral Phaser plugin free for Windows Mac and Linux

Expiry: May 9th

Ewan Bristow has released UZU Spectral Phaser, a free audio plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux. UZU is a frequency-domain phaser that operates using an FFT-based spectral engine, enabling dense notch filtering with up to 8,192 notches—significantly more than typical time-domain phasers.

Instead of relying on all-pass networks and short delays, UZU applies spectral filtering directly in the frequency domain. This approach allows precise control over notch spacing, phase offset, and spectral emphasis, making it suitable for static phasing as well as animated movement across the spectrum.

Key controls and functions include:

  • Adjustable distance between spectral notches
  • Main phase offset for the filter shape
  • Notch sharpness/depth control
  • Automatic offset modulation speed
  • Global dry/wet mix
  • Spectral bin rounding for rhythmic, pulsing effects
  • Weighting mode switch (Hz or logarithmic)
  • 5x multiplier for speed and offset ranges
  • Low-end preservation below 250 Hz
  • Configurable spectral block size for the engine

The plugin’s spectral approach lends itself to detailed tone-shaping and motion across a wide range of material. It can be used to create tightly spaced comb-like textures, wide spectral sweeps, or subtle static coloration. The low-end preserve control helps maintain bass fundamentals while applying heavier processing to higher frequencies, and the block size setting offers a balance between spectral resolution and responsiveness.

UZU is provided in VST3, CLAP, and AU formats. It is available free of charge, with optional donations accepted by the developer.

NovoNotes releases SnapClip clipper plugin for Mac and Windows available as a free download

Expiry: May 31st

NovoNotes has released SnapClip, a clipper plugin for macOS and Windows. The standard edition is available as a free download until May 31, with licenses obtained during the campaign remaining perpetual. After the campaign, new licenses are scheduled to be priced at $19.

SnapClip is designed to increase perceived loudness by trimming peaks above a threshold while leaving signals below the threshold unaffected. It preserves transient attack by avoiding time-constant behavior typical of compressors.

The processor supports up to 16x oversampling and uses ADAA (Antiderivative Anti-Aliasing) to reduce aliasing. Plugin processing latency is 0 samples, allowing insertion across multiple tracks and buses without delay compensation.

The interface centers on a graph-based curve editor with detailed metering. A waveform display and reduction meters visualize hard clipping in red and soft clipping in yellow, enabling separate control of soft- and hard-clip behavior.

Snap Adjust streamlines initial setup by calculating Input Gain, Saturation, and Threshold from a recent peak-history window and a chosen target reduction. The calculation is deterministic and does not use AI or machine learning.

  • Step 1: Set the hard-clip amount with Input Gain to shave fast, spike-like transients (displayed in red).
  • Step 2: Shape the soft-clip curve on the graph to gently reduce wider peaks (displayed in yellow).

Additional features include ADAA on/off switching, a minimum-phase design to avoid pre-ringing, and a phase-compensated Dry/Wet control for mix blending. The developer indicates that combining 16x oversampling with ADAA can achieve noise reduction comparable to much higher oversampling factors at lower CPU load. Channel formats include mono and stereo.

Typical uses include:

  • Track processing on transient-heavy sources such as drums and percussion.
  • Bus processing to trim occasional peaks and raise average level.
  • Pre-compressor placement to control fast spikes before downstream dynamics.
  • Tone shaping with light soft clipping where subtle harmonics are desired.

Two editions are outlined:

SnapClip (standard edition, released):

  • Source-faithful design below threshold
  • Up to 16x oversampling
  • ADAA on/off
  • Snap Adjust for quick setup
  • Minimum-phase, zero-latency processing
  • Phase-compensated Dry/Wet mix
  • Channel support: mono and stereo

SnapClip Pro (in development; $59 planned):

  • Linear-phase or minimum-phase selection
  • True Peak ceiling
  • Up to 256x oversampling for offline rendering
  • Gain Link / auto gain options
  • Additional clipping algorithms
  • More detailed Snap Adjust controls
  • Channel support: mono, stereo, multichannel

The standard edition is positioned for use across many tracks and transient-focused material, while the Pro edition is aimed at mastering and critical finishing tasks. Specifications for the Pro edition may change during development.

System requirements: macOS 11 or later (VST3, AU, AAX; Apple Silicon native) and Windows 11 (VST3). Supported CPUs include Intel i5 or later and Apple Silicon. The plugin has been verified with major DAWs including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Studio One, Ableton Live, Reaper, Bitwig, and FL Studio.

Pulsar Audio Smasher Plugin Returns As Free Download

Expiry: Unknown

Pulsar Audio has reissued its Smasher compressor plugin as a free download for a limited time. The plugin typically retails for €49. Licenses are perpetual and are delivered by email after completing a brief four‑question survey.

Smasher is a three‑control dynamics processor modeled after the 1176 FET compressor operating in the “all‑buttons‑in” configuration. This setup alters the unit’s behavior compared with standard ratio settings, producing rapid attack characteristics and a denser, more saturated response associated with internal feedback designs.

The interface centers on speed and simplicity, with three knobs for quick level and blend decisions. A Mix control enables parallel compression, allowing users to balance the processed signal with the dry source to retain transients while increasing sustain and harmonic content.

Intended uses include drum buses, room microphones, vocals, bass, and synths. On drums and percussion, Smasher can emphasize ambience and sustain. On vocals, it can push a signal forward while maintaining articulation through parallel blending. For bass or synth lines, it can add midrange presence and controlled saturation. The plugin supports workflows ranging from light grit and transient shaping to heavily compressed textures.

According to the developer, the processing aims to replicate circuit behaviors unique to the 1176’s all‑buttons‑in mode, including bias and feedback interactions that influence tone, attack, and release responses. The design emphasizes quick setup for creative use in parallel chains, buses, or aggressive effects inserts.

System requirements (Windows)

  • CPU: Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i9/Xeon or AMD quad‑core (minimum)
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Storage: 1 GB free disk space
  • Operating system: Windows 10 64‑bit or Windows 11 64‑bit
  • GPU: OpenGL 2.0 compatible
  • Display: 1024×768 minimum (1920×1080 recommended), 60 Hz refresh rate

System requirements (macOS)

  • CPU: Intel Core i3/i5/i7/Xeon or Apple Silicon (M‑series)
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Storage: 1 GB free disk space
  • Operating system: macOS 10.11 or later
  • GPU: OpenGL 2.0 compatible

Plugin formats

  • AAX Native (64‑bit)
  • Audio Unit (64‑bit)
  • VST 2.4 (64‑bit)
  • VST 3 (64‑bit)
